Censorship is a B**ch
Posted June 15th, 2005 by Court Sullivan
While our military and government fight to install and preserve democracy in corrupt and troubled countries worldwide, one of our own giant multinational corporations has given in practically hands in the air to the softest of undemocratic demands: censorship of blogs in China.
From Adbumb:
You might be thinking, "Oh well, sucks for the Chinese. Glad I don't live there." But remember, not only is this an American company freely endorsing censorship (pun intended), this is an American company freely endorsing censorship (pun intended again) of INDIVIDUALS' PERSONAL SPACE ON THE INTERNET.
As the article indicates, Microsoft isn't the only company to cave in to capit**ism at the expense of fr**dom. And as more and more large companies set precedents like this, don't be surprised when others jump on the bandwagon and point to them for justification.
F**kin' aye man, just one of those things that makes me a little concerned for the future of the Internet.
From Adbumb:
The AP has reported that [Microsoft] has come to an agreement with the Chinese government to censor specific words and phrases via their blogging tool, MSN Spaces (Microsoft holds a 50% stake in Shanghai MSN Network Communications Technology, which launched the tool in China last month.)
Terms that are now verboten if you’re a blogger in China? Such nasties as “democracy”, “freedom” and “human rights” are banned, as are a few high-falutin’ political terms like “communism”, “socialism” and “capitalism”. Stick those in a subject line or get caught blogging with them by one of China’s more than 30,000 Internet cops and you’re in for a bruising."

Dude, I totally agree... thats just pathetic and stupid. Just goes to show how scared the government really is of us.

Just another display of the big bad government afraid of the potential danger posed by freedom. Damn the man.
How can we kill others in the name of freedom - when we can't even say we are that free. We get to choose between two parties (not including the independants, who sometimes make more sense, but have no chance.) when we vote, both are to afraid to say what matters. I know we are lucky compared to other countries, but if we are going to kill people in the name of democracy, we should have a better choice than Bush or Kerry. (At least the moral majority won - What a joke!)
)
Just to clarify, this post has nothing to do with the US Government, which I believe does a fairly good job at resisting censorship and upholding freedom of speech.
This post is about how US COMPANIES are giving in to censorship ABROAD in order to make money. If it was just business locally (in China) that would be one thing, but these are companies censoring INTERNET material.
Who supports these companies in question? - with tax breaks etc... If I wanted to run for president, I would have to conform to the Democratic or Republican parties in question. Who do you think supports the parties in question, the average joe, no - it's companies who have a lot of cash, like MSN. The US government resists censorship??? Are you joking? Against abortion, against gay marriage,, against stem cell research to save lives, - But absolutely for killing and destruction in Iraq, and possibly Iran in the future, in the name of the UN, oh sorry, in the name of Bush. Who do you think these corporations are propelled by and vice versa. It's all about the almighty dollar, government or corporation! Do what you want on the internet, lets focus on reality - thousands are dying. How can you say it has nothing to do with the US government? We are against killing a fetus, but not a living person... It is wrong to study stem cells, but OK to kill a person who doesn't agree with us? Sorry, it doesn't make sense to me.
At some point you need to ditch the macro-arguing and focus on a specific point.
Why do people always have to bring fetuses or Bush or Iraq into the equation?
And since when does the US govenment put people to death for speaking out against stem cell research? I feel pretty safe in America speaking my mind without reprecussions. Unlike the Chinese. Which was what this whole post was about. Once again.
Yes, we still have freedom of speech in america. It's the last bastion of true freedom in the world. But our media is owned by corporate companies who do their best to make sure we know only what they want us to know. So, though we legally have free press, we also have corporate ownership of said press, as well as corporate influence in government. And the sad truth is, if MSN didn't agree to the censorship terms, a smaller company would have come in and made the cash. The chinese are fucked; and their govt is gonna make sure that they stay fucked. Rest assured, our government is jealous of the complete control the Chinese are under. The scariest part of this whole thing is that they're trying to control the internet. Even Hitler couldn't have pulled that off.
The scariest thing about how fucked china is, is they have an amazingly large military and could, at will, take greater parts of asia and about all of the pacific islands. i'm based on okinawa and part of the reason we are here is to attempt to stop china from taking taiwan, everyone here knows theres no chance that the fraction of people here can take on china, but its more of a preventative measure because china knows that if they take taiwan, we on okinawa run down to defend them, and if china wins, then they have to defend from the rest of the military, thats busy with iraq still. our military affairs are sad today, back in the day we took on europe and asia. now we cant even do one country.
Being a collegiate Capitalist (an oxymoron I know but I will continue with the alliteration) can I congratulate China for being forward thinking and willing to embrace Western idea's, and Microsoft for trying to get a foothold in a market with over 1 Billion people, who happen to love us (not the government) and their new found freedom…kind of. If China wants to censor, let them, they have been doing it for over 50 years. The last thing we need to do is get our politics in this screw up both countries and instead let us all enjoy some censored Chinese blogs, maybe throw back some rice wine and lets us both make a little money. Even though I am six months late on this comment, I thought I would put it out there.
Jared, just a history lesson, we didn't "take on asia", we took on Japan. and Alex, I seriously hope you're kidding, first off, I highly doubt the chinese people love us, and letting something happen just because it has happened before would leave us in a country with legal slavery and laws against belonging to a religion other than the one currently in power.
This post was about the things M$ is willing to sacrifice for the almighty buck, not bush or stem cells. (still not sure how that came up btw)
