The ideal that the public will take it upon themselves to research policies and candidates is just that: an ideal. Why do you think the Republican strategy to paint John Kerry as a "flip flopper" was so effective? 90% of the population believes everything they see in the media. If it's not explicitly sold as fantasy, well then, it must be true.
