Read more snippets...Luke: Man, she’s
hot.

Brian: She’s in high school.

Luke: Junior or Senior?

Brian: You see, this is why people say you’re fucked up.

The truth of the matter is, we don’t know what the truth of the matter is. But we’re determined to find out. And by
“we,” I of course mean me, the
dedicated scientist
, working his best to get to the bottom of the sludge pool that is the questions of life. I don’t do this for me. I don’t do this for
this website. I don’t even do this for the American people. I do this because I am led by a much stronger force. And that force, naturally, is located between my
legs. But I digress...

This week’s column isn’t about me and how I struggle daily to unearth the truth of human nature; rather, this is about a question
that has plagued humanity (and by humanity, I mean me) for many years. That question: why is the legal age for consensual adult sex in this country set at eighteen?

Now, I know what some of you may be thinking. But believe me, this is not as cut and dry an issue as you may think. For example, in almost
every European country, the legal age of consent is 16. In certain Asian countries, it’s even lower. And, as the gap between the US and its foreign counterparts
closes, I think it’s time we at least explore the possibility that these Euro spenders and chopstick-using outsiders may be onto something. So, because it has worked
before, I am dusting off the old pro and con format so that we (and yes, I think you know by now that by we I mean me, er, I) may get to the bottom of this painstakingly
important issue.

Please keep in mind that I am addressing the pros and cons of changing the legal age of consent to 16. Any lower than that, and well, I think
we could seriously have problems. Now, without anymore introductory mumbo-jumbo, let’s (to borrow a phrase from the redneck parlance of our time) get ‘er
done.

Pros

  • If the legal age of
    consent were 16
, I could flirt with every cute cashier I run into without worrying that I might be on the cusp of breaking a law.
  • If the legal age of consent were 16, women would most likely marry older men, who would die sooner, and thus leave them a whole bunch of
money that they could use to work less.
  • If the legal age of consent were sixteen, there would be a lot fewer criminal cases for the police to investigate. This way, the cops could
focus on important stuff, like who stole my skateboard when I was 8 (the lazy bitches never even tried to get to the bottom of that one).
  • If the legal age of consent were 16, there would be less child pornography. I mean, leering at a 16-year-old hottie is just normal. Lump the fans of 16- and 17-year-olds
into the pile of freaks made up in part by those kiddie-porn weirdos, and you’re just being unfair to everyone. As the man says, everything ain’t black and
white. There are many shades and stuff.
  • If the legal age of consent were 16, more young girls would get pregnant in high school, leading to less young girls in school, causing
that ever important decrease in class size. (Are you listening, President Bush? That was an important sentence your aid just read to you. You may want to have him or her
    read it again.)

Cons

  • If the legal age of consent were 16… shit, I can’t think of anything.

Clearly, I have adequately explored this issue, and yet I could not find a single downside to changing the legal age of consent from 18 to 16
years old. And in truth, I’m really just trying to help the girls with this column. I mean, they do mature faster than boys and all. Why deny them the chance to
prove their maturity unto the society that seems to deem them the weaker sex? I mean, is this 2006 or isn’t it? Please people, band together. Help the women of
America by lowering the age of consent in the USA to 16 years old.

If you won’t do it for me, America, at least do it for our country and its amazing females.

Nate’s note: Please keep in the mind that none of this changes the fact that I will not break the law and sleep with a woman
(girl?) under the age of 18. I am a law abiding
citizen
. Now, if the law was changed...

"if the legal age of consent were 16, there would be a lot fewer criminal cases for the police to investigate."

Here in Canada, that's why we lowered it in the fisrt place. Now were trying to get it up to 16.... it's currently 14, kinda young dontcha think, eh?

how did a country right over me manage to stay under my radar for something like this for so long?

anybody wanna share a room with me in toronto this weekend?

sorry, it's reserved for the little lady.

The age of consent is different from state to state... last I checked it was 16 in many states, so much so that it is "average" in the U.S.

The only national law I think is about crossing state lines with a minor... there's probably others.

You're welcome.

Brilliant, simply brilliant

Con:
If the legal age of consent was 16, there would be even more pregnant girls walking around my old high school.

When you are in a wintery Minnesota sitting in a hot tub with a gorgeous blonde with huge boobs rubbing herself against you, and your friend later has to tell you to back off because she is 16 - it is time for something to change.

I liked the article Nate, but i remember when i was in school there was an unofficial rule among mates that if a chick was 3 or more years younger she was too young. (That all changed at uni tho).
Anyway looking at the site Dan posted i love how in QLD age of consent is 16 but for anal sex its 18. crazy

In Canada the age of consent is 18, but things get a bit fuzzy around the margin. If one individual is under 18 and one over, the maximum age difference is three (or four, depending if they changed it yet...fuck I should pay more attention) years. If both are under 18, the age difference permissable is 5 years. So here, you could probably fuck a minor. Nobody will care if you do. What are you worried about anyways, it's not like she'll press charges if it's consenting...just don't make a videotape. And it's a federal thing in Canada, it doesn't differ from province to province but I know in the states they have a lot more power of discretion on a provincial (statial?!) level.

So yeah. Gen, it's not 14 here, even though a fourteen year old can have sex, they can't have sex with, say, a 40 year old and they definitely can't be in porn, etc.

From now on, before I even consider sex with a minor, I'm consulting Opp. Or maybe I'll just click on that link.

Thanks for reading everyone. Only the great PIC readers could be supportive of a piece like this. You guys are the Victoria Secret classic Cut wonder Bra to my saggy double ds.

My home state, SC, has it written in the original constitution that the age of consent is 14. I know, it's SC and it's to be expected. It was later ammended in the state's House to be raised to 16. But there are the fuzzy particulars that Nadia mentioned. I think the age difference is only one year, and then it can be charged as statutory rape on the part of the older one. All I can say is that I love it when states get their own rights, but I hate it when idiots decide what those rights will be.

D's picture

Its for sure 14 in Canada. Consent has nothing to do with that porn thing. It's a seperate issue.

Roxy's picture

I'm alright with the age of consent, it's the namby pamby rules that go along with it, like if they are a minor over the age of consent you better be 2 years or less younger. That part can burn in Hell. Forever. We should keep it at over the age limit and consenting. Easy and keeps people happy.

This article was actually okay. I was just glad that it wasn't as crappy as the last one. Thanks for a less crappy article.

Aysha's picture

I thought in Canada the age of consent is 14, but if you're 14 you can only sleep with a 15 year-old. If you're 15 then only with a 14 and 16 year-old etc.

Of course, I could be talking out of my ass. But hey, I prefer what I just wrote there. The legal age of consent in the UK is 16. I'm fine with that but it can be such a huge problem for a couple where one is say 15 and the other 16/17.

oh an age of consent article, nothing like the ENTIRE website dedicated to the subject.

you continue to suck nate. but at least you have consistency. right? am i right?! yeah!

Nathan DeGraaf's picture

Anonymous, just because I'm banging your ex-girlfriend is no reason to leave such negative posts. At the very least, you could chime in about the consent laws, you know, since she was only eighteen when you first fucked her.

Thanks for your input, DC Drunk, D, Aysha and Roxy.

freda's picture

i thought we did age of consent by state in the united states. did that change? well, anyway, it seems as if almost all the sex i've had is illegal. i'm under 18 and i say fuck the age of consent.

freda's picture

once more. the age of consent should just be whenever i chose to consent to have sex. for disgusting middle-aged creeps, it's never.

freda's picture

and this should be my last: i'll be 18 on june 1 is that concerns anyone.

Dan Opp's picture

June 1st. The train runs through Freda-ville.

Damn Nate, how is it that your articles always stir up so much drama.....?? I laughed my ass off, but that might have been because I was nicely buzzed when I first read it.... I should try reading it sober, maybe it won't be so funny :-) I think you still owe me a drink, the last one doesn't count, because that was a pity drink for me having just broken up w/ my boyfriend and all.... (always find a loophole when it comes to free booze) :-)

April (Eric's Co-worker)'s picture

Ok, lets turn this around. I don't think I would care for a sixteen year old "Boy". Key word "Boy". I hate training "Boys" they are no fun. They follow you around drooling for you to do them again. So I'd rather retrain an old guy who already has more than 6 minutes in him then train a young one that only has 2 minutes in him. At least the old guy already knows how to get me off!!! (Love your column Nate, Eric was right about you)

To go off topic a bit, has anyone heard of the "rule of seven"? Its this stoopid thing my ex and her friends did to determine what's the youngest person that someone could date. Take your age, divide it by 2 and then add 7. So for an old man grad student like me, 24/2 +7= 19. I was just wondering if anyone else had heard of this b/c my ex and her friends were, how should I say, kind of stupid.

Massachusetts is 16...Ted Kennedy knows his shit.

M's picture

wait. i'm confussed and i don't feel like reading comments, but isn't it in most states 16?

i thought it was in nj...and i mean, gosh who really listents to that? i guess me and my boyfriend broke those rules a while back. oopsie!
